Abstract

Quality Beverage Inc. (Taunton, Massachusetts) distributes 9 brands of beer under the Anheuser-Busch label to Southeastern Massachusetts. Quality serves 300 package stores and 800 restaurants, bars, and hotels. In 1988, Quality handled nearly 4 million cases of beer. Quality President Tim Moran explains that the stock is arranged by product velocity, not by label; the fastest moving items are closest to the loading area. Quality's success is partially due to the fleet of lift trucks supplied by Yale Industrial Trucks through M & G Materials Handling Corp. A typical day consists of loading or unloading between 32 and 43 trucks. All loading is palletized, including the draft containers. Since Massachusetts is a state in which deposits can be redeemed for returned glass and aluminum containers, Quality picks up empty containers and returns them to the warehouse. Quality also operates 7 straight trucks for deliveries in congested areas.
