Kevin Justice, president of Imirage Inc., an electronic marketing services firm in Allentown, swears by his cable modem, which he's had for about six months.
He's thrilled with its lightning-fast speed and its constant access to the Internet. "It gets around the hassle of every time you want to go (on-line) having to dial up with a modem," he says.
Justice says that in his business, which has 10 employees, a cable modem is also cost-effective.
Although he pays more per month for the cable vs. a phone connection, it's still cheaper than having to buy a dial-up modem for every computer in his office and additional communications equipment.
Currently, ProLog of Palmerton is the only direct Internet access provider in the Lehigh Valley area to offer cable modems to some of its subscribers, in partnership with Service Electric and Blue Ridge Cable companies.
But RCN Corp., the successor to C-TEC Cable Systems, plans to offer cable rnodems to its subscribers in the Lehigh Valley next month. RCN, which is based in Princeton, N.J., already offers cable modems in the New York and Boston areas. Jeff Reinhard, assistant general manager of Prolog, says it's been offering cable modems to some subscribers in the Allentown area, Lehighton, Stroudsburg and Palmerton for about two years.
