Whitaker, among others, has used co-therapy with individuals to overcome transference problems, in difficult patients or for teaching purposes. The use of co-therapy as described here is quite different from the traditional method. Each therapy is pre-planned in detail, and the co-therapists are assigned "roles." One therapist is supportive and encouraging, while the other plays devil's advocate. Hence at least one of them is dishonest by design.
