President George W. Bush won his bid for reelection, beating Sen. John F. Kerry in a close election. The President won 51.1 percent of the popular vote and 286 electoral votes. He needed 270 to win.
At his victory celebration, President Bush commended his opponent for waging a spirited campaign and vowed to help the emerging democracies in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said that servicemen and women will return to the United States "with the honor they have earned." He added that, with the help of U.S. allies, "we will fight this war on terror with every resource of our national power so our children can live in freedom and peace."
In the U.S. Senate, Republicans picked up four seats. Ten new senators were elected, eight Republicans and two Democrats. Republicans now have a 55 to 44 majority over the Democrats. The biggest defeat in the Senate was incumbent Democrat Tom Daschle's loss to Republican John Thune in South Dakota. Daschle had been the minority leader in the Senate. Minority Whip Harry M. Reid (D-NV) announced he will now run for the position.
