The Big Green
Holly Goldberg Sloan; USA 1995; Buena Vista; Certificate Lf; 97 minutes; Producer Roger Birnbaum; Screenplay Holly Goldberg Sloan; Lead Actors Steve Guttenberg, Olivia D'Abo, Jay O. Sanders, Bug Hall
With a plot that follows Texas-based British teacher (Olivia D'Abo) as she encourages her new class to play soccer, this is possibly the first Disney film to feature a penalty shoot-out. Its personable young cast dribble gamely through the clichés, while the gliding boot-level camerawork puts When Saturday Comes to shame.*
Fist of the North Star
Tony Randel; USA 1995; 20.20; Certificate 18; 88 minutes; Producers Mark Yellen, Aki Komine; Screenplay Peter Atkins, Tony Rondel; Lead Actors Gary Daniels, Costas Mandylor, Chris Penn, Melvin Van Pebbles, Malcolm McDowell
It's easy to be reminded of Orson Welles's Macbeth (but only for all the wrong reasons) while watching this ludicrously cramped nonsense, which presents the regulation post-Apocalypse wasteland on what is obviously a very small sound stage. McDowell gets killed early on, but his voice-over still stubbornly guides the worthless plot, which involves a charisma-free hero (Gary Daniels) triumphing over a boring dictator (Costas Mandylor).
The Maddening
Danny Huston; USA 1995; EV; Certificate 18; 92 minutes; Producers Leslie Greif; Screenplay Henry Slesar, Leslie Greif; Lead Actors Burt Reynolds, Angie Dickinson, Mia Sara, William Hickey
A young woman (Mia Sara) and her child stop off at a gas station and become the prisoners of the crazy couple (Burt Reynolds and Angie Dickinson) who own it. Not for nothing...
