Abstract

Injury-related fear has been cited as the primary barrier for return to sport after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Furthermore, injury-related fear has been predictive of secondary ACL injury within 24 months of return to sport. The Stress and Injury Model and the Cognitive Appraisal Model can be used to explain the negative consequences of injury-related fear after ACLR. This review discusses the application of both models to the post-ACLR population. Theory-based clinical practice and research recommendations will be provided to potentially improve sports participation and decrease injury risk after ACLR.
