Paraguay en el Centenario: la creación de la nación mestiza

Abstract

El texto trabaja la articulación identitaria que realizó la intelectualidad paraguaya después de la guerra contra la Triple Alianza (1864-1870) y en los albores de la celebración del Centenario de la independencia (1811). Se pone de manifiesto cómo de un concepto de raza mestiza, pero blanca, sui géneris, superior a las del resto del continente, que permitió el heroísmo del soldado en la guerra, se pasa a un uso eminentemente político del mestizaje como cimentador de un Estado fuerte, unipersonal.

This text studies the articulation of identity carried out by Paraguayan intellectuals after the war against the Triple Alliance (1864-1870) and in the eve of celebrating the centennial of their independence (1811). The author shows how a previous identity, based on a concept of mestizo race, but white in its own way, superior to the rest of the continent and allowing the soldiers’ heroism in war, was transformed into a mainly political use of mixed races as the foundations of a strong nation.
