A 43-year-old man committed suicide due to suicidal ideation following synergistic drug effect during concomitant administration of prednisone for acute alcoholic hepatitis and clonidine and off label use of gabapentin for alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). Subsequently, he died of cardiac standstill following gun shot wound injury to head.
The man presented to the emergency department due to jaundice of the eyes and skin for 7 days. He had been receiving homeopathic pills, but was unable to recall the content and name of pills. His medical history was significant for chronic major depressive disorder, prediabetes, obesity, hyperlipidaemia and alcohol abuse. He reported consumption of 3-5 drinks daily for the last 15 years.
