Not only are the over-50s taking more adventurous trips abroad, but they're becoming the new breed of "gap year" travellers. To the extent that in the past few months two websites have been launched to focus on this growing market.
Some of the new generation of gappers simply want to go globetrotting and explore in greater depth the cultures of countries they've visited before. Others decide to combine their travel with trying out new activities, learning languages and other skills or hobbies.
But, increasingly, many "grown-up gappers" want to travel to poorer countries where they can put their existing skills and experience to good use. The first website to focus on this generation - goldengapyears.com - was set up at the beginning of this year by Kirsty Weir and Rebecca Jordan of Gapwork Publishing and the founders of www.gapwork.com, one of the gap year information sites for youngsters.
Prompted by and increasing number of enquires for information relevant to this age group from their own and friends' parents, they decided to set up a website offering advice and tips on what's available on taking a "gap year" later in life.
That includes planning your trip, organising finances, as well as pointers for essential preparation and what to do with your home while you're away....
