Why are Girty's Woods so important to the people of Millvale Borough and Shaler and Reserve townships that students, businesses and residents have joined to raise funds to save them?
Because the green space soaks up rainwater and protects the area from flooding when Girty's Run overflows. This is an important concern in an area that has been hard hit many times during heavy storms that have left streets running with water and mud from landslides that then seep into basements and overflow sewers, shutting down businesses, the Shaler Area School District and costing homeowners plenty in repairs.
That's why Allegheny Land Trust has been working with the communities to raise money needed to purchase the property. And now it's countdown time.
March 31 is the deadline for the land trust to raise $724,000 to permanently protect Girty's Woods. Donating is as easy as selecting a button at alleghenylandtrust.org/donate. The land trust wants to buy the land to provide permanent protection to the area.
