Venezuela has claimed the Essequibo territory since 1899 when it was stripped of it by an arbitration award rigged between the United States and the United Kingdom. It is a theme that has crossed our history for the last three centuries. The Guayana Esequiba is a region of the Guiana Shield between the west of the Essequibo River to the Milestone at the top of Mount Roraima in South America. It has an area of ??more than 160,000 square kilometers, This territory belongs to Venezuela since the founding of the Genital Captaincy of our country by the Spanish empire in 1777.
On October 3, 1899, when the award that established the border line between Venezuela and British Guiana was issued, the Arbitration Treaty of February 2, 1897 constituted the legal basis for this limit judgment. In these circumstances, the Treaty of February 17, 1966, known as the Geneva Agreement, constitutes the instrument that regulates our claim to sovereignty in Guayana Esequiba; reiterated on May 26, 1966 with the express reservation of our rights over the entire area that is on the left bank of the Essequibo River, taking it from its source to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean.
