Antibacterial, proximate and antioxidant studies of Oldenlandia Herbacea extract

Abstract

The antibacterial and antioxidant activities of methanolic extract of Oldenlandia herbacea were studied, also phytochemical screening and proximate analysis were investigated. The results revealed that methanolic extract of Oldenlandia herbacea was more effective on Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis but less active on Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas bacteria. The extract showed a very high percentage inhibition comparable to the standard which indicated that it has a very high antioxidant activity. The phytochemical screening results revealed that the methanolic extract of the Oldenlandia herbacea contains tannins, glycosides, saponins, phenols, alkaloids, carbohydrates, balsams and volatile oil. The proximate analysis of the plant Oldenlandia herbacea showed that it contained moisture 12.81%, crude fibre 27.67%, crude fat 0.15%, crude protein 1.43%, ash 7.05% and carbohydrate 50.89%.The phytochemicals and proximate analyses were carried out using standard methods. The antioxidant activity was determined by the radical scavenging ability using the stable radical 1, 1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil. The antibacterial activity was carried out by Agar well diffusion method. The extract can serve as a potential source of antioxidant and herbal drug, which may be due to the presence of the phytochemicals.
