Abstract

[...]in 2015, Mellinger et al. suggested that at least 0.27% of the American adults with private health insurance had liver cirrhosis [1]. [...]the incidence of liver cirrhosis is increasing due to the increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [2]. In recent years, effective antiviral agents and other treatment options for liver cirrhosis have contributed to increasing the life expectancy of these patients compared to any previous era [3,4]. [...]compared to the past, patients with liver cirrhosis are increasingly more likely to undergo surgery. [...]the risk-benefit assessment should be scrutinized before the decision to operate to avoid unnecessary adverse events. In clinical practice, we often experience poor postoperative outcomes in patients classified as low risk by Mayo scores. [...]the aim of this was i) to evaluate the in-hospital mortality of patients with liver cirrhosis after surgery, and ii) identify the risk factors using a nationwide population-based study over five years.
