That is the message in the opening sequence, in which a tux-clad agent is killed in a Rammstein concert by the vile criminal organization Anarchy 99. American spymaster Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) comes to the conclusion that since the spy game involves lots of dangerous stunts, who needs a trained intelligence-gatherer when you can recruit an outlaw extreme athlete?
That would be Xander Cage (Vin Diesel), a big, bruisin' lug given to stealing senators' cars and driving them off high bridges. Gibbons sends Xander -- X for short -- to Prague to infiltrate Anarchy 99 and win the trust of its brutal leader Yorgi (Marton Csokas) and his possibly treacherous girlfriend Yelena (Asia Argento).
Director Rob Cohen films stunts with almost pornographic relish. Any big stunt gets covered by about nine different angles, with all cameras apparently cranking for slow motion.
But between stunts, XXX demonstrates a dearth of the things that still make Bond superior: Wit. Elegance. And a little thing called style.
The DVD extras include a so-called documentary titled Diesel Powered that actually sheds little light on star Vin Diesel. An in-depth doc on Asia Argento would have been infinitely more fascinating.
