AFRIFORUM has launched a medal fund for Olympic and Paralympic medallists following media reports that the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) had very little or no funds to reward medallists for their accomplishments.
However, Sascoc president Barry Hendricks said yesterday that athletes who won medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Tokyo 2020 Paralympics would receive financial incentives.
On Monday, athletes such as former rugby player Eddie “Kwagga” Boucher and swimmer Roland Schoeman took to Twitter and spoke about medal winners not receiving bonuses and having to rely on the kindness of others.
Hendricks confirmed that the reports that the governing body would not be rewarding Tatjana Schoenmaker and Bianca Buitendag were misleading.
