Abstract

NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) is developing SmartLab, a laboratory workflow management system, as part of its Digital Transformation initiative. Literature on digital transformation indicates that a common obstacle to success is a lack of adoption. One factor affecting adoption is the user experience (user interface and the available functionality). This thesis applied a user centered approach to the analysis, development, and testing of SmartLab. Functional and usability requirements were developed from analysis of interviews of potential users. A user interface (UI) and application programming interface (API) were implemented based on the requirements. Usability testing of the UI and API indicated they showed promise as being effective and intuitive. User comments also indicated a positive opinion of SmartLab and an eagerness to use it.
