"A West Sound physician will help shepherd the Olympic torch to the opening ceremonies in Salt Lake City
West Sound would be hard-pressed to find a better-suited representative than David Silk to carry the Olympic torch.
Few in the area share his understanding of what it takes to compete in the Winter Olympics.
Before becoming an emergency room doctor at Harrison Hospital in 1999, Silk, 36, competed as a speed skater in the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics, was a member of the US World Team coached the junior national team.
He will carry the flame two-tenths of a mile on Jan. 23 or 24, somewhere between Seattle and Everett, as it makes its way toward Salt Lake City, Utah, site of the Feb. 8-24 Olympics.
""It will be really nice,"" Silk said. ""When it finally lands in Salt Lake, it will be nice to know I touched it and helped it along. It's really neat to be a part of the Olympic spirit.""
