The new owners of KOCB Television Channel 34 have found Oklahoma City's economy healthy and growing.
"We are very pleased. The Oklahoma City economy is strong and the television business has been good this year," said Perry Sook, president of Superior Communications Group Inc., and general manager of the Oklahoma City station.
"We are taking a larger share of increase in market as a result of what we have done this year," he said. "We have basically doubled the value of the station from the time we purchased it in January."
Superior Communications Group Inc. completed purchase of KOCB Channel 34 Jan. 28 from former owner Ted Baze. Baze helped start the station in 1979 and owned 100 percent of the stock when it was sold to superior.
"I think we have dramatically improved the look and image of the station, and I know that we have dramatically improved our operating results," Sook said. "Our overall audience has grown 13 percent and our year-to-date advertising revenues are up 22 percent."
The new owners have made a significant investment in programming, acquiring shows like "Home Improvement," "The Simpsons," and movie packages. KOCB has been awarded the rights to OU basketball for the 1994-95 season, along with Clear Channel Sports, the station's production partner.
"We saw opportunities, basically in all areas, to increase the profile of the station," he said. "We have affiliated with the Paramount Network, which will launch in January what you could call the fifth network with two nights of prime time programing."
One of those nights will be anchored by the latest Star Trek show, Star Trek Voyager.
