Because Mariah Carey hardly toured during the '90s while she was selling all those records, fans could say she's the best-known singer they barely know at all.
But Carey made up for lost time Saturday. In her first major tour in eight years - and her Las Vegas debut - the pop superstar not only let fans see as much of her as the law would allow, but introduced them to her dog, her hair (its name is Venus) and even her evil alter-ego.
The two-hour concert was full of surprises that challenged the cliches of the usual pop diva showcase. It was creatively staged, laced with humor and never let its dancers or video upstage the main attraction.
Of course, Carey, who turns 30 on March 27, would be pretty hard to upstage. The earthy if sometimes overly precocious New Yorker took charge of the stage as though she'd been working the arenas every year, instead of existing...
