It was unusual last week to pick up any major newspaper without some mention of the pending demise of Wynn Las Vegas' "Avenue Q."
My hunch is that this excellent, small-scaled musical might succeed in a smaller house, with less expectation. Then, too, if the Strip (and/or the budding Performing Arts Center) becomes a place where theater lovers can spend a weekend taking in four or five Broadway shows without schlepping to New York, perhaps there will be room here for intimate entertainments like "Avenue Q."
Meanwhile, there's the newly opened, very Vegas-y "Hairspray" at Luxor, which gives us a heartfelt performance by Harvey Fierstein in drag that goes way beyond gimmickry. ...
