Olympic champion speedskater Dan Jansen, whose personal and athletic triumphs and tragedies played out in front of the world, has filed for divorce from his wife, Robin, the mother of his two daughters.
The divorce papers were filed by Dan Jansen's lawyer in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Reached by phone at his home in Greenfield on Wednesday, Jansen, 31, said: "It's very sad. It's sad for all of us, for Robin and me and our families."
His voice was barely audible.
"We are not unlike every married couple," Jansen added. "We had some troubles, and unfortunately they couldn't be overcome in this case. But it's a very private thing."
He declined to be more specific about what has come between the couple Americans got to know on their television sets during Jansen's quest for a gold medal, which finally came in the 1994 Winter Olympics.
