El objetivo principal del trabajo titulado La poética de la novela histórica mexicana del siglo XIX: la historia y la cultura como testimonio mítico es reconocer las características estilísticas y composicionales que rigieron la elaboración artística de la historia en el género de la novela histórica durante el siglo XIX, así como establecer las condiciones históricas y culturales que determinaron ese proceso. Para ello se estudian tres textos, La hija del Judío, de Justo Sierra O'Reilly, Gil Gómez, el Insurgente o la hija del médico, de Juan Díaz Covarrubias, y Perucho, nieto de Periquillo, de autor anónimo, los cuales, creo, son representativos de las diferentes elaboraciones novelescas que asumió la historia.
