Welcome to the 4th volume of Advanced Intelligent Systems! 2021 was an excellent year for our premium journal, thanks to the feedback and guidance from our esteemed board members and readers, and the outstanding contributions of our authors. Last June, Advanced Intelligent Systems was accepted by Web of Science to be indexed in its Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) database. A few months later, in December, the journal was promoted to the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) database in the subject categories of “Automation & Control Systems”, “Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence”, and “Robotics”. The inclusion in the SCIE database shows that Advanced Intelligent Systems meets the selection criteria of quality and impact set by Web of Science. As a result, the journal will receive a Journal Impact Factor this year upon the 2022 JCR release. The expected Impact Factor will likely place Advanced Intelligent Systems in the top tier of journals in relevant topical fields, confirming its status as a premium journal able to provide authors with an optimal publishing platform to disseminate their research results.
The scope of Advanced Intelligent Systems covers timely topics that are not only of interest to scientists and engineers but are also closely followed by the general public. Since the launch of the journal, several papers published in the journal have been highlighted by social media platforms and news outlets. This trend has continued in 2021 and is reflected in the Altmetric Scores of several of our articles (Table 1 ).
Table 1 Papers published in 2021 with an Altmetric Score above 50 (Altmetric, 13 Dec 2021)
Our promotional activities to enhance the visibility of the journal and its papers continued in 2021. Articles published in Advanced Intelligent Systems are regularly picked up by the editors of our partner news platform, Advanced Science News, and highlighted on their
Advanced Intelligent Systems was active in the community last year as the organizer and sponsor of several events: It sponsored poster and/or oral prizes at 8 different workshops in two prestigious robotics conferences (IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation and IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems). In December 2021, Advanced Intelligent Systems, in collaboration with the Institute of Photonic Chips at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, organized the “Photonics & Advanced Intelligent Systems International Conference”, co-chaired by Prof. Min Gu (USST) and Dr. Hakim Meskine. Fifteen renowned speakers presented their research, and more than 2200 attendees joined this one-day online event.
Several topics that fall within the multi-disciplinary scope of Advanced Intelligent Systems were spotlighted in 2021 (Figure 1 ) through special issues on:
-
1) “Soft Bionic Sensors and Actuators” guest-edited by Woo Soo Kim (Simon Fraser University) and Jamie Paik (EPFL),
-
2) “Intelligent Soft Actuators and Flexible Devices” guest-edited by Li Zhang (The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Shaoxing Qu (Zhejiang University), and Xuemin Du (Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology), and
-
3) “Smarter Additive Manufacturing Through Artificial Intelligence and Data-Driven Approaches” guest-edited by Grace X. Gu (UC Berkeley) and Keith Brown (Boston University).
Special issues on neuromorphic engineering and space robotics will be published this year.
The Advisory Board members of Advanced Intelligent Systems play a vital role in maintaining the quality and visibility of the journal by constantly giving feedback and tips to the editors and introducing the journal to their communities. We are very proud of our diverse and knowledgeable Advisory Board. To reflect/represent our diverse and evolving audience, from time to time we update the journal's board and are happy to announce the recent appointment of five new members to the International Advisory Board of Advanced Intelligent Systems (Figure 2 ):
