Abstract

We have tried to analyze the Birsañta Movement headed by Birsa Munda in 1895. We have taken into account the socioeconomic conditions in which the munda group found itself at that time, and the interaction that took place between this tribal group and the agents of change that entered into contact with him. Trying to understand the Ulgulan as an exclusively agrarian, political or religious movement would only provide a partial vision of the phenomenon; it must be apprehended in its entirety, as a unit whose different aspects must be analyzed to reach a correct understanding. This has been our intention, despite the obstacle of the scarcity of information sources. The work consists of a first part in which the Munda group is presented, its situation since the end of the 18th century is explained, the changes produced in its society in the 19th century, the movements that preceded or were contemporary with the Birsaita Movement, and Lastly, the development of Ulgulan and its consequences. The second part corresponds to the analysis of the movement as a social phenomenon and the observation of mythical structures related to millennial thought, considering different elements of this movement. The appendix of songs and prayers of the Birsaites serves to complement this last part of the analysis.
