The radio station known as Q-105, which pioneered the off-the-wall Morning Zoo format and until two years ago was the undisputed ratings champion in Tampa Bay, is being sold.
Phoenix-based Edens Broadcasting Inc. said Tuesday it plans to sell WRBQ-FM (104.7) and WRBQ-AM (1380) in this area, as well as an AM and FM station in Richmond, Va., to Clear Channel Communications Inc. of San Antonio, Texas for $18.5-million.
The prices radio stations fetch have dipped somewhat since the late 1980s, as a sluggish economy shrinks advertising sales. Edens Broadcasting bought the Tampa Bay stations in 1984 as part of a seven-station deal worth $43-million.
Clear Channel owns radio and television stations in 15 markets. Its all-cash purchase is expected to be completed within 90 days, pending federal regulatory approval.
