The Tampa Bay Rowdies intend to have a busy summer.
In addition to their American Professional Soccer League schedule, which includes 13 more regular-season games before the end of August, the Rowdies have added a game against the U.S. Olympic team later this month and will play in the inaugural Professional Cup series later this summer, general manager Rodney Marsh announced Thursday.
The Rowdies will play the U.S. Olympic team in an exhibition match at 8 p.m. June 27 in Tampa Stadium. It will be the final game for the Olympians before they play Italy in the opening round of the Olympics July 24.
Beginning in August, all five APSL teams will participate in the Professional Cup, a new, eight-team tournament of professional teams from the United States and Canada. It includes F.C. Supra de Montreal and the Vancouver 86ers of the Canadian Soccer League and the Chicago Power of the indoor National Professional Soccer League.
The tentative schedule for the Professional Cup has the Rowdies facing Supra Aug. 1 at the University of South Florida, then playing Supra Aug. 12 in Montreal. Other first-round matchups include San Francisco Bay vs. Chicago, Colorado vs. Vancouver and Fort Lauderdale vs. Miami.
The winner of the Tampa Bay-Montreal series will face the Fort Lauderdale-Miami winner in the semifinals, tentatively set for Sept. 4-6. The San Francisco Bay-Chicago winner will play...
