Lindsey Buckingham, Out Of The Cradle, Reprise ++++
A slew of post-Fleetwood Mac releases is gathering in the CD bins - Mick Fleetwood's Zoo, John McVie's newest project, even Rick Vito's recent solo outing - but the most listenable is Lindsey Buckingham's Out Of The Cradle. Given the comforts and seclusion of his own home studio, Buckingham's latest solo CD sports a sense of direction, buoyed by all varieties of guitars and layered vocals.
Out Of The Cradle is song-oriented work, rich in six-string artistry, yet faithful to its material. Buckingham's harmonies and backups dart in and out of the mix like cuckoo birds, but there is little clutter. Whereas Buckingham's earlier efforts were dominated by Fairlight synthesizer, Out Of The Cradle is organic and warm, heavy on acoustic and nylon-string guitar, and its best moments include tracks such as Countdown, Soul Drifter and the delicate, harrowing...
