After three years of futility trying to restore its dominance in Top 40, Q-105 has hitched up to another wagon: country.
At 1:05 p.m. Friday, after Jody Watley's Real Love came to a close, DJ Chuck Bear took to the air surrounded by, he said, "the rest of the Q-105 family."
They let out a whoop. Bear played Happy Trails, which gave way to Garth Brooks' Friends in Low Places. Then came Brooks' The Dance. After some commercials, it was another Brooks tune.
Bear said Q-105 (WRBQ-FM) was beginning "a new era," but the word "country" never was uttered in the new format's first 20 minutes. Program director Brian Thomas, who took over for Bear, said the music would stop only twice an hour to "play more Garth Brooks in a row."
