Museum has designs on fund raising

Racine -- A historic home built by H.F. Johnson Sr., the son of the founder of S.C. Johnson & Son Inc., will be transformed by top interior designers from the region as the Racine Art Museum designer showhouse.
The event, "A Century of Artful Living," will be a fund-raiser for the museum, highlight the art of interior design and recognize the contribution to the area's architecture and art made by the Johnson family.
"This will emphasize interior design as fine art and an art that goes hand in hand with architecture," said Bruce W. Pepich, executive director and curator of collections for the Racine Art Museum.
The event, the museum's first designer showhouse, also will draw attention to contemporary crafts -- objects considered decorative arts, Pepich said.
The museum has the third most significant collection of contemporary crafts, including ceramics and works in fiber, glass, metal and wood, in the nation.
"It lets us think about the way we live and the environment we create for ourselves," Pepich said.
Special tours will include Johnson buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright that organizers say further illustrate the Johnson family's support of architecture, the arts and the Racine-area community.
