Abstract

Coaches, athletes, and sports commentators often use the term “mental toughness.” An athlete being mentally tough has been considered a key component to an athlete’s performance. Previous studies have identified key factors that contribute to mental toughness, however not many have considered competitive response as one of those factors. Evaluating how an athlete will respond in a competitive environment is essential for many coaches. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to investigate if mental toughness definitions and assessment tools should include the important element of competitive response. The results of the systematic review yielded information showing that aspects of competitive response were found to be related to mental toughness. The findings may contribute to the research and practice of mental toughness by scholars, sport performance consultants, and other sport professionals. For example, future researchers may expand on the connection between competitive response and mental toughness, and sport professionals may work on aspects of competitive response to develop mental toughness in athletes.
