The Boozers
What does Ed Lowery do when he's not leading his legendary (in these parts) third-wave ska act Magadog (see Page 45), or rocking out with Waterdigger? Getting drunk and playing loud, fast and terrifically sloppy punk with The Boozers. The side project took shape last year and has found the five-piece gigging around Tampa Bay with fellow punks Car Bomb Driver (and others) at delightful dives such as The Emerald in downtown St. Petersburg. myspace.com/theboozersdrinkbeer.

The Scurvy
Formed in Pinellas County in 2005, The Scurvy is one of those throwback punk bands - gruff vocals; three chords and a cloud of dust rhythms - that have dedicated their entire musical output to chronicling the pros and cons of alcohol. Not there's anything wrong with that. Sample song titles: Alcoholics Anonymous, Seven Drunken Nights and Road Beer. The lineup is Brandon Fergus (vocals), Green Willy (guitar), Jesse Robinson (guitar), Steve Marks (drums) and Los 13 (bass). Their CD Banned from the Bay drops July 4. myspace.com/thescurvybooking.

Springfield Cubs
This Tampa quartet plays it mostly garage gruff but there are also shades of emo in the their rock stylings. The band appears to be just finding its stride. "We began forming in June 2007 by running adds on the Myspace classifieds," said singer/guitarist Anthony Reboudo. "By early 2008, we played our first show and play about once a month around the bay area." Jeremy Kestenbaum (guitar/vocals), Ilyn Knapik (bass/vocals) and Jason Winter (drums) round out the group. myspace.com/springfieldcubs.

Holes and Hearts
It's a bit strange hearing 11-year-old Riley James (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and his 13-year-old brother, Casey Charles (guitar, vocals), perform original, angst-ridden rock that recalls vintage grunge. But the boys pull it off. "We want to touch people and make them feel deeply with our words and bang their heads and shake to our music," Charles says on the band's Web site. Paul Harmz (bass), Danny Cayocca (drums) join the act. holesandhearts.com.

Mena Brinno
Tampa's Mena Brinno - Old Gothic for "Moon Fever," we're told - is a fierce, four-piece hard-rock band that specializes in dramatic sonics marked by the soaring vocals of frontwoman Katy Decker. She describes her band as "operatic folk metal," and that works for us....
