THE 16th Commonwealth Games are in overdrive and you have been trying your darnest to keep up with it all. There's no doubt about it, you're having the time of your life, but secretly you feel you need a break from it all.
If all you've got is a day in which to soak in as much as you can of Malaysian culture, then your best bet is by far Malacca (or Melaka), which is a two-hour leisurely drive or bus ride south of Kuala Lumpur.
Before moseying down, though, be sure to pick up the absolutely crucial brochure on Malacca from Tourism Malaysia. However, contrary to the belief that all Tourism Malaysia outlets or booths are equal, only a select few outlets - as I found out last week - have this much sought after brochure.
Call the tourist information centre nearest you and ask if it stocks the brochure. For one thing, the information centres by and at the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station have not had any for about five months now.
Nevertheless, one can pick up a couple from the tourist information...
