REVIEWS ROCK/POP * NEIL YOUNG - Road Rock V1 (Reprise/64:31/I/ HDCD): Yet another live set from the grunge godfather who teams up with "Friends & Relatives" on this spirited romp that's marred by a lack of surprise and adventure.
A fuzz guitar-propelled version of Cowgirl In The Sand is stretched to a somewhat blurry 18-minute workout, and such things as Walk On and the new Fool For Your Love are treated in an enjoyable if unspectacular fashion.
The acoustic ballad Peace Of Mind gets a nice chorus-enhanced reworking but the album only comes alive with the next track, Words, whose 11 minutes of "loose blooze" is pure vintage Young.
There's also a rousing rendition of Tonight's The Night that reminds you how much harrowing true-life drama is packed into the title track of Young's most compelling album.
Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders joins Young for a rather ragged but energised reading of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower which takes out the album.
Not exactly one of Young's most inspiring live recordings but maybe the next instalment will contain more excitingly reworked material than the stuff here. (Distributed by Warner Music) Performance: *** Sound: ****
* INCUBUS - When Incubus Attacks Vol. 1 (Epic/Immortal/27:19/LP): Despite inviting comparisons to Korn and to a lesser extent Limp Bizkit, this Los Angeles band does seem to push beyond the boundaries of aggressive alt- rock.
