SUN'S SIGNATURE: Sun's Signature???? (Partisan)
Grangemouth girl Elizabeth Fraser breaks a recording silence of some 13 years with this beautiful five-track mini-album. The former Cocteau Twin has recorded with partner Damon Reece (whose back catalogue has seen him work with Massive Attack and Spiritualized), and it's wonderful to hear that stunning voice again, more restrained and perhaps more content now. A surprising assist comes from former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett, who provides acoustic accompaniment on closing Make Lovely The Day, which sounds like it's been plucked from a bygone age.

As Grammy-nominated Gauthier turns 60, it's heartwarming to find her in a far better place than many of her earlier albums. However wonderful her material was, you couldn't help but see the self-destructive person that had chronicled her own failings. Now she's in love and unafraid to tell you on Bandflavoured opener Fall Apart World and Amsterdam. But she's also lamenting the loss of friends and musical influences like John Prine and Nanci Griffith on How Could You Be Gone and Til I See You Again. STELLA: Up And Away???? (Sub Pop)
