Fifty years ago Aug. 7, a baseball game between the Kansas City Monarchs and the All Worcester Stars for the benefit of Buddie Club, Chapter 4 Disabled American Veterans was held at Holy Cross' Fitton Field before a large crowd.
The Monarchs, of course, featured the great Satchel Paige, along with other great blacks of the time.
"We (Worcester) had ex-Yankee pitcher Bump Hadley pitching for us,." writes Bobby Callan, one of the Worcester Stars. "At that time no one had any idea that in 1947 Jackie Robinson would break the color line and Satchel Paige would wind up in the Hall of Fame."
The Monarchs won the game 3-0.
Among the local standouts on the Worcester team were Jimmy and Frankie Scavone, Tweet Guiney, Luke Dowd, Lenny Hines, Jimmy Fairurst, Callan, Deo Hildreth, Chipper Sweeney, Lefty Salvati, Danny Lemovitz and Art Eurenius. Coaches were Al Mason and Lefty Wilson.
Many of the Worcester Stars played college or minor league baseball. Callan, a shortstop and pitcher, went to Dartmouth College and later signed with the Washington Senators. Hildreth also played in the Washington organization. Jimmy Scavone played minor league baseball in Buffalo, and Hines, a catcher, hooked on with the New York Giants organization.
A great finish allowed Fred and Wayne Barry of Worcester Country Club to capture the 43 Annual Father-Son Golf Tournament...
