WORCESTER - The moon can teach people a lot about God and about relationships. It can even pull a frayed relationship together, said Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum.
What does it teach? It can teach Biblical history and about the relationship between God and the Jewish people, he said.
Rosenbaum, of Congregation Beth Israel, said the ancient Jews and the sages saw the beauty of the moon in ways modern people should learn to understand. He wants to revive the ancient custom of blessing the moon when it reappears in the new-moon phase.
"To see the new moon is as if to see the very face of God. God reveals himself through acts of nature," the rabbi said. The moon reflects light and the return of the light can remind one of God's presence, he said.
