Kittie, the head-banging, head-turning band of honeys from the Great White North, has what it takes to be the next cat's meow of heavy metal.
Kittie -- singer-guitarist Morgan Lander, 17; guitarist-vocalist Fallon Bowman, 16; drummer Mercedes Lander, 15; and bassist Talena Atfield, 16 -- formed three years ago during gym class in a London, Ont., high school. With its command of teen angst, not only does Kittie smell like teen spirit, it spits it.
With a riot grrrl purr, these Canadian cool cats should be commended for staying away from cutesy rhymes and squeaky-clean concoctions that seem to plague many teeny-boppers in music these days. While most contemporary teen ditties are sugar-coated, Kittie's songs sound laced with poison. And what makes Kittie more than your typical teen noise band is its strong melodic sense.
Recalling the Runaways (the teen group that gave birth to Joan Jett and Lita Ford), in addition to Cradle of Filth, Bikini Kill, early Hole and a trampier version of Josie & the Pussycats, this ferocious feline foursome is the pick of the litter when it comes to it's take-no-prisoners attitude.
