MIRI, Mon. - The Department of Civil Aviation is puzzled why the Dornier 228-212 airplane which crashed on Saturday at a hill in the Lambir National Park, killing all 10 people on board, flew 11km away from the normal approach route to Miri Airport.
The DCA investigation team has begun the task of finding the cause of the crash which occurred on the hillslope of Bukit Lambir, about 14km from the airport at 7.44pm.
The DCA's director of flight safety, Abdul Aziz Shukor, said today the Royal Brunei Airlines-operated airplane did not follow the normal approach route to the Miri airport for planes enroute from Bandar Seri Begawan.
He said instead, the ill-fated Deustche Aerospace Dornier 228 made a 11km detour of the normal approach route, which is about 5km from the airport.
