THE FIRST thing you notice is that there are guys out there fighting for women's rights and affirmative action. Not just guys, but hunky guys. They're angry idealistic white males.
The guys, three of them, were out on the Golden Gate Bridge on Wednesday with seven women demonstrating against the so-called California Civil Rights Initiative, which would roll back all state affirmative action programs.
As part of a student movement called Freedom Summer '96, they were doing what they called a "Burma Shave," even though their parents weren't old enough to shave when shaving cream was sold with sequential signs.
Their signs read, "Read between the lies, defeat CCRI," and, "Honk if you support women's rights."
People honked. Toyotas honked. Trucks honked. Pickups with camper tops honked. Women honked. Guys honked.
Now, understand one thing. These guys are not working for women's rights and minority rights as a trick to perpetuate the white male hegemony and get a few dates.
Dee Martin, 23, one of the honchos of Freedom Summer '96, told me that she doesn't know exactly how many men are among the campaign's 2,000 volunteers and 250 interns.
