Florida authorities have raised the provisional death toll to 24, most of them elderly and drowned. Some US media outlets are reporting 64 deaths.
In Lee County, controversy has erupted over the apparent delay in ordering the evacuation of the more than 600,000 residents. The county has half of the confirmed victims.
The order was released Tuesday morning, while neighboring counties asked their residents to evacuate on Monday, according to The New York Times.
Meanwhile, the search continues for the 17 passengers on a migrant boat that capsized Wednesday near the Florida Keys.
