THE fresh-faced youth from Kedah who won Malaysian Idol 2 is ripping up the pop songbook for jazz, writes SUBHADRA DEVAN.
We remember him most as the sweet Chinese lad who won Malaysian Idol 2 in 2005. Four years, three albums and one DVD later, Danell Lee is ready to jazz up the local music scene with his first solo showcase.
And jazz, says the 27-year-old from Kedah, is his choice of expression on the Feb 27 event.
Danell? Yes. He changed his name last August 2008, following popular Chinese belief that a change of name can bring better luck. Indians sometimes use numerology for the same purpose.
Anyway, today, you can call him Danell Lee Jie Hun (formerly Daniel Lee Chee Hun). "But this is just my artiste name."
After his Idol win, Lee released his first single Mimpi (Dream) in 2005 and his self-titled debut album was released in November that same year.
The album had 10 songs including Mimpi (Mandarin and Malay versions), Heaven Knows (English), and seven other songs in Mandarin, one of which he composed himself. The album reached platinum status by breaching...
