Abstract
Neurodivergent individuals represent approximately 10% of the population in the United States. With a labor force of 165 million, we can extrapolate that an estimated 16 million individuals are struggling with neurodivergent conditions like autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and dyslexia in the workplace. Most workplaces do not recognize, understand, or adapt to allow neurodivergent individuals to fully utilize their knowledge, skills, and abilities. Of these 16 million neurodivergent individuals, 20% are likely to be unemployed or underemployed. The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the workplace experiences of neurodivergent individuals, specifically those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to highlight the challenges they have faced, and identify the workplace practices that create a sense of inclusiveness that enables them to be successful employees.
