Abstract

WASHINGTON They came out of curiosity. They came out of obligation for a favorite son of Pennsylvania. In some cases, they came because the line at the nearby Washington Monument was too long.

About 1,000 people turned out yesterday to listen and witness a small part of political Americana, as Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter formally declared himself a Republican candidate for president. Most were supporters from the Philadelphia area who have supported him in past U.S. Senate elections.

Chuck Bode, 49, woke at 5 a.m. and walked an hour because of the Philadelphia transit strike to catch one of eight buses chartered by Specter's campaign, to ensure there would be a crowd.
