Crime A Heart Full of Headstones Ian Rankin: Orion, $33 The latest instalment in the life and career of John Rebus opens with the now ex-detective standing in the dock. So, from the first pages of Rankin’s 24th Rebus novel it is clear the stakes cannot be any higher for the Edinburgh anti-hero. Meanwhile, detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke is investigating a police officer who has been accused of domestic violence. The officer, Francis Haggard, is based at Tynecastle station, a place where rumours of corruption routinely swirl. When Haggard is murdered there is no shortage of suspects and Rebus is dragged in to the mess. He has his own longstanding murky secrets with the Tynecastle cops. There is a lot going on in this world of Rebus, with big questions left hanging for the next instalment.
