Abstract

The process of habituation has been shown to produce large and orderly effects on many topographies of responding across a variety of species. Only more recently have the effects of habituation on human operant behavior undergone investigation. Research involving slot machine play is well suited for the study of habituation and is also of great social importance. Eleven undergraduate students participated by playing a simulated slot machine program in one of two experimental groups. The first group played on the simulated slot machine designed to recreate conditions under which habituation was likely to occur. The second group played under conditions where habituation was not likely to occur. Results indicate that habituation can affect the duration of slot machine play.
