Casco Bay College's 136-year history has ended with its purchase by the larger, 32-year-old Andover College.
At a press conference Monday, Lee C. Jenkins, the owner of Andover, refused to say how much he paid for Casco Bay. He said the buyout was made possible when Education Management Corp. of Pittsburgh made a minority investment in Andover. John McKernan, a former Maine governor who is vice chairman of Education Management, helped arrange the investment.
Students of both schools said they expect the merger will make Andover College more attractive academically.
"A lot more students will want to go here," said Michelle Fichera, a 1999 graduate of Portland High School who wants to study criminal justice at Andover. She was in the school's no-smoking lounge Monday, filling out paperwork for admission.
