Desigual contracted again in 2022. The chain has not given up on opening new stores, but ended the year with less than 400 stores, a hundred fewer than before the outbreak of the pandemic. The company now has 393 stores, fifteen fewer than it had at the beginning of the year and 23 fewer than it had at the end of the first half. Like most of the industry, the company prefers to focus on flagship stores in selected locations rather than smaller outlets.
The organization founded and chaired by Thomas Meyer has been suffering for a decade from a drop in sales that has taken it from turning over 964 million in 2014 to selling 371 million in 2021. The firm once opened 120 stores a year, but struggled to adapt to new trends and was forced to retreat as revenues declined.
