Abstract

Alternate abstract:

Throughout the late medieval centuries, several Castilian cities acquired a collective identity that marked their role as political agents. In this process the concession, maintenance and defense of their fiscal privileges played a central role. In this work we will analyze the complex interrelation between fiscal privilege and urban identity through the study of three cities –Toledo, Seville and Murcia– that enjoyed a status already recognized as exceptional by their contemporaries.
