The Bronx Zoo - the oldest, biggest and most sophisticated; Bronx River Parkway and Fordham Road; (212) 367-1010; open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, to 5:30 p.m. Sundays and holidays; $3.75 adults, $1.50 children Fridays through Mondays, donations Tuesdays-Thursdays, senior citizens and children under 2 free; parking $3; extra charges for some exhibits, including the Children's Zoo and Jungle World.
The Queens Zoo - a charming, small zoo featuring North American animals, as well as a children's petting zoo, hidden in a corner of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, near the Hall of Science; 111th Street at 46th Avenue, Corona; (718) 699-7239; open 10 a.m.-3:45 p.m. daily; free; you can also ride on a restored 82-year-old carousel for 50 cents.
Central Park Children's Zoo - Jonah's whale, Noah's ark and a lot of cuddly animals to pet; Fifth Avenue and 64th Street, Manhattan; (212) 408-0271; open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily; admission is 10 cents.
Prospect Park Zoo - 1930s-era zoo with animals in cages; also a children's farmyard that opens after Easter; Flatbush Avenue and Empire Boulevard, Brooklyn; (718) 965-6560; open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. daily; free.
Staten Island Zoo - 1930s-era zoo with some natural-habitat exhibits, as well as a children's zoo; Broadway in Barrett Park, Staten Island; (718) 442-3101; open 10 a.m.-4:45 p.m. daily; admission $1 for children over 3 and adults, free for senior citizens and the disabled; free parking. THE SPINDLY-LEGGED, 3-week-old giraffe, James VI - at 6 feet tall, a virtual miniature of his towering mother, Clara - hides shyly in a stall in the Bronx Zoo's Carter Giraffe House, having had enough of noisy children's groups for the day.
