The doctor who arranged Mitchell Steinberg's adoption last year says he had treated Hedda Nussbaum for infertility at the time and knew she and her companion Joel Steinberg might be interested in adopting the boy, according to prosecutors who questioned the doctor yesterday.
Dr. Peter Sarosi, an obstetrician with practices in Manhattan and Hempstead, outlined his involvement in the case to Nassau County prosecutors who are investigating how the Greenwich Village couple gained custody of the boy, who apparently was never adopted legally.
According to the prosecutors, Assistant District Attorneys Robert Guido and Megan Cahill, Sarosi gave the following account: Sarosi said another physician referred Nicole Smigiel, the boy's natural mother, to him on June 21, 1986. The unwed Massapequa Park teenager was already in the early stages...
